“What emerges from these compelling photographs, beyond the simple force of character that is in itself often so disarming, is that each figure embodies an individual narrative, and a trace of local history, that builds over the images into a cross-section and a collective portrait of a new rural society."

David Chandler 2013

The Anthology of Rural Life is a collaborative photographic venture developed by photographers Oliver Udy and Colin Robins. The work provides a comparative visual study of the continuities and differences in patterns of life within contemporary rural areas. These in turn reflect shifting economic, social and cultural forces occurring in diverse European contexts.

The project has so far involved working within rural communities in south-west England, southern Finland, northern Italy and central Poland. These regions were selected to provide a basic geographical spread across western Europe.

The intention of the photographers is to extend the project by developing it as a platform for showing and publishing new work sourced from both Udy and Robins’ continuing investigations as well as by other selected practitioners whose work is similarly centred around contemporary rural life.
