Farmers of the Lizard

In early 2024, we were commissioned by Kestle Barton Gallery
to make a new series of portraits focusing on farming on the Lizard peninsula
in Cornwall.


In the following summer an exhibition of the Anthology of
Rural Life was held at the gallery. This included work from across Europe
alongside the new Lizard portraits.


The exhibition aims to develop a narrative around shifts in
rural life as well as to some of the complexities currently facing the
countryside. It also provides a recognition of the central place that farming
continues to play in the social and economic landscape of the Lizard.

	Sympathy for the Devil

These
photographs are part of a substantial photographic record of the
surroundings, and activities of two elderly, unmarried brothers who farm in
Cornwall.&#38;nbsp; They have spent their lives working
on the same land, however failing health and advancing age are undermining the
viable continuation of this farm. One brother manages the animals and oversees
the general farm work, whilst the other organises their food and medical
prescriptions. When not doing this, he spends much of his time listening to his
record collection. The Rolling Stones are by far his favourite. 


The historian
Patrick Joyce points to the fallacy of how, in contemporary society, we
‘aspire to join our internal lives, our personal subjectivities, with
‘nature’ so that we can be ‘at one’ with it’. &#38;nbsp;As he says, ‘this is a universe
that in the present takes the sentimental view of nature as alternatively a
garden or a wilderness’.  However, those
born into traditional agricultural cultures may understand things differently.

	Farmers of the Lizard

In early 2024, we were commissioned by Kestle Barton Gallery
to make a new series of portraits focusing on farming on the Lizard peninsula
in Cornwall.


We photographed a diverse range of farmers and farming
families on the Lizard. These included both large and small producers and
people relatively new to the region as well as those whose families have worked
the same land for five, or even six, generations.


Whilst
dairy farming is the dominant form of farming on the Lizard there are numerous
examples of emerging patterns of diversification. These are clearly manifest in
initiatives such as the growth of regenerative and organic models, shifts from
crop production to horticulture and in the subsidising of farming through
tourism and farm shops. &#38;nbsp;

A portfolio of the Lizard portraits will be housed at the
Cornish archive Kresen Kernow as part of an on-going collection of ARL work.

	DOĞU TRAKYA


During February 2024 we photographed in Eastern Thrace, Turkey,
a European edgeland situated between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and connected
by the Bosporus Strait, forming one of the continental boundaries between
Europe and Asia.


We worked closely with Ammar Kiliç from the Sociology
Department of Namik Kemel University in Tekirdağ. Ammar introduced us to
many small communities scattered through the Süleymanpaşa&#38;nbsp;district, an important
area of extensive and varied agricultural production and export. 


As is the case wherever we have photographed, there is the
increasing domination over agricultural production and rural economies by
international agribusiness. Even though a site might be relatively small in scale,
its agricultural production is fundamentally controlled by what is, in essence,
an agropoly. &#38;nbsp;Nonetheless, we saw examples
of more progressive ventures, including a farmer working with specialists to
explore new strains of extreme weather-resistant cereal crops in recognition of
the effects of climate change. And a woman who has returned to her family’s
land and is attempting to develop an organic and regenerative approach to
farming.

	HAJDÚ-BIHAR // ÉSZAK-ALFÖLD

In July 2023 we worked around in the Northern Great Plain region of Hungary, focussing on the area around Debrecen and the town of&#38;nbsp; Hortobágy. The area sits on and around the Hungarian&#38;nbsp;steppe (or puszta) with Hortobágy being the key focus for this landscape. This is an UNESCO protected site and National Park which retains patterns of traditional pastoral farming. As the UNESCO website explains:&#38;nbsp;The Puszta, represented by the Hortobágy National Park, is a complex mosaic of natural grasslands, loess ridges, alkaline pastures, meadows and smaller and larger wetlands (mostly marshes), which has presented ideal conditions for pastoralism since prehistoric times and which existed before the appearance of large animal-breeding cultures.Today the region is also economically important as an international tourist destination, which draws upon notions of Hungarian national identity through referencing the legacy of horse husbandry and nomadic cultures that once existed across the puszta.

	THE BLIND FARMER

Throughout 2021 our focus shifted to a single family-run farm. The grandfather of the current farmer had to retire when his eyesight failed, eventually leading to blindness. His grandson described how he himself awoke from a blindness in regard to what he considers to be the harmful, agribusiness orientated practices of contemporary food production and soil management.


Currently the farm recorded here has
been developing a new, and potentially progressive approach through an almost
total reduction in chemical, hormone and pesticide use, allied to new models of
promoting better soil health. There is also a shift in emphasis from a regional
network of pork production toward a more local one. 


Whilst there is a growing awareness of this
approach within other sectors, with a focus on models of localised and environmentally
friendly production, it is substantially out of step with the dominant model of
industrialised global food farming systems.


With policy changes coming into place
that would see farms focus on the re-wilding, this document represents not only
a turning point in the lives of one family, but a symbol of the dilemmas that
will face all agriculture in the coming years.

	MERIDEN

In 2020 we were comissioned by GRAIN to produce work on the Rural areas of the West Midlands in the UK. &#38;nbsp;For this, we focussed on Meriden, a place historically thought of as the centre point of England. The village of Meriden sits in what is known as the ‘Meriden Gap’ –&#38;nbsp; a roughly 10 square mile radius of mostly rural, pastoral and agricultural green belt, sheltering in what is now the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull.&#38;nbsp; The notion of it as the&#38;nbsp; ‘centre of England’ is manifest in its roadside place name, in the plaque on an ancient cross standing on the village green as well as in the ‘Heart of England Social Club’,&#38;nbsp; ‘Heart of England Conference and Events Centre’, ‘Heart of England Aeromodelling Club’and so forth. Meriden then, the self-proclaimed navel of England, provides a microcosm of the various social, economic and political histories of contemporary English rurality.
